The annual Friends of the Library book sale in Park City kicks off this Saturday. Volunteers are needed over the weekend.
Doors open for the book sale Saturday morning at 9am, with members given exclusive access to the selection until 10:30. The public can then browse the books until 2 o’clock. Sunday and Monday hours are 9am-2pm. Monday is also $10 for as many books as you can fit in a Friends of the Library bag.
Prices will be $2 for hardbacks, and $1 for paperbacks and children’s books. Unsold books then get donated to a distributor.
Memberships start at $25 and can be purchased online at parkcitylibrary.org, or at the door.
COVID-19 cancelled last year’s book sale and organizer Gene Daly said they have no shortage of books for this year’s sale.
“We had, in February of last year, a man say he had books to donate,” said Daly. “He donated 56 boxes of fiction books, so we have books.”
The sale takes place on the 3rd floor of the Park City Library on Norfolk Avenue. A room will be dedicated to children's books, the community room for non fiction, and the stage and Santy Auditorium will be dedicated to fiction.
The library did hold a popup sale over the Fourth of July holiday. Organizer Araby Leary said that event surpassed expectations and indicates that this weekend could be a big one for the library.
“We were so surprised, we had almost 50% more purchases in July than we had the year before, so there’s pent-up demand,” Leary said.
The library is looking for volunteers to help staff the event, particularly on Friday between 9am and 2pm to help set up. Daly said it’s easy work.
“Friday is the day they take all of the books out of the boxes and set them up,” she said. “We have everything arranged for them alphabetically, but we need volunteers. The community, of course, that’s what makes our sale work, and the volunteers are the backbone.”
She added that if you volunteer after 2pm on Monday, you keep as many leftover books as you want for free.
