Governor Gary Herbert has ordered all public schools, K-12 to extend closure through Friday, May 1.
Two weeks ago, Governor Herbert ordered schools closed to circumvent widespread infection of COVID-19. With the increasing spread throughout the state, he announced public schools and technical schools will stay closed through Friday, May 1. State Superintendent Syd Dickson says they will continue to evaluate the situation before deciding if they’ll remain closed through the school year.
In his directive, he acknowledges the additional work and stress that results from closing schools statewide. But he says it is a necessary step to slow the spread of the virus. They continue to focus efforts on slowing the spread to not overwhelm healthcare systems and hospitals.
State Superintendent Dickson encourages families and students to remain socially connected through this period and she acknowledges the flexibility and initiative shown by Utah’s educators in dealing with the challenges of teaching remotely.
The statement says meal services at K-12 public schools will continue on an as-needed basis.
