The council began discussing the change last month and made it official Wednesday: more people will qualify for property tax relief in Wasatch County.
Statewide, the income limit to qualify for tax relief is $40,480 annually for people 66 and older. But in Wasatch County, the median income for that age group is more than double that – around $84,000 – and county treasurer Amber Gibbs said she meets plenty of people who struggle to pay their property taxes.
To ease the financial burden for more locals, the county council opted to raise the income limit by 50%. Now, people who earn roughly $60,000 are eligible for tax relief.
The council’s decision will be repealed if the state legislature adopts a higher statewide income limit, as county manager Dustin Grabau explained.
“The idea is that if they’re close to the amount that we adopted, then we would automatically repeal this, having accomplished the intent of having a more aggressive income exemption,” he said.
To qualify for tax relief, older adults, widowed residents and residents living with some disabilities must fill out an application on the county website. The application period opens May 1, 2025, and ends September 1, 2025.
