Wasatch County school board to announce new high school name, mascot

The Wasatch County School District Board of Education meets at the Wasatch Education Center in Heber.

The mascot announcement for Deer Creek High School is slated for the Wasatch County School District Board of Education meeting Tuesday, Jan. 28.

The district announced the name for the new school on social media earlier this month: Deer Creek High School. The school colors will be navy, silver and white.

It asked students, district staff, parents and the public to cast their votes for the school’s mascot, with five options: the Broncos, the Diamondbacks, the Riverhawks, the Thunder or the Yeti.

It’s been a long road to giving the new high school an identity.

A year ago, a naming committee asked the district to move forward with Deer Creek High. In June 2024, the newly named principal for the school, Justin Kelly, pitched the Bolts for the mascot.

The district hit pause just a few months later after community members protested those choices.

But locals didn’t like the next name choice, Iron Horse High School, either. Over 700 residents signed a petition asking the district to send out a new survey and stick with the winning option. Some said they were unhappy with how the decision was handled.

The school district listened. When it published new surveys this month, it promised residents the top vote-getters in the new survey would be the official decision for the new high school.

Locals can hear the results of the latest surveys during the school board’s study session Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 5 p.m.

More information about Tuesday’s meeting and a link to attend online are available on the district's website.
