Utah Sets New COVID-19 Records

Utah saw its highest number of COVID-19 cases this weekend, and a Wasatch County man is among the recent deaths reported due to the virus.

On Saturday, the Utah Department of Health reported 643 new cases, topping the old record set just the day before on Friday, which was 586.  State epidemiologist Dr. Angela Dunn released a statement Saturday saying the number of new cases in Utah is “sobering.”  She noted that for three straight weeks the cases in Utah have been increasing at a rate that is not sustainable, and the state is at risk for overwhelming its hospital capacity.

Dunn added that the only explanation for the increase is that Utah is experiencing a real and dramatic rise in the spread of COVID-19 across the state.  She urged residents to practice good physical distancing and wearing a mask when that is not possible.

On Sunday, the Utah Department of Health reported 394 new cases and a positive testing rate of 5.9%.

In the past week, Summit County has seen 16 new cases, bringing the total to 463.   Wasatch County has seen 29 new cases in the past week, bringing the total to 380.  Wasatch County has seen three deaths due to COVID-19.  Summit County has not had any.
