There are a few events celebrating Memorial Day and in Park City and in Heber City.
Every year, the American Legion Post 14 supports the veteran community of Park City in a couple of ways. Memorial Day and Veteren’s Day are the main events they help organize. They partner with the Park City Museum to bring speakers and patriotic music to the cemetery on Memorial Day starting at 9 AM.
Post member, Merideth Reed says this year, they’re doing two events. The first is to commemorate fallen veterans and is at the Park City Cemetery on Kearns Boulevard.
“We have the Treble Makers. We’re so grateful for their participation. They come in and sing for us. The Summit County Sheriff’s office has a bagpiper and a bugler to play taps. And, we also have Brigadier General Doug Cherry who is a local Park City resident. He is the commander of the 76th division of the US Army Reserves. So, he’s going to give the Memorial Day address.”
The Utah Commemorative Air Force will do a fly-over during the service with historic aircraft.
The second event is scheduled at 10 AM at Squatters and they’ll unveil a plaque commemorating the B-18 crash that happened on Iron Mountain in 1941.
“And so, we do have some of the family members who are the survivors from that crew. We have four direct family members. We have lots of grandchildren, nieces, nephews coming in for the ceremony. We have folks from Minnesota, Louisiana, Texas, Idaho, California, of course, Utah as well.”
The Wasatch County, 2019 Memorial Day Program starts at eight with complimentary pastries at the Wasatch County Event Center at 415 So. Southfields Rd. in Heber City. They’ll pass out American Flags for the Memorial Day service which starts at 9.
